Consultant in Accident and Emergency Medicine, Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, since 1992.

Former member of the Council and Executive Comittee of the British Association for Emergency Medicine. Elected member of the Board of the Faculty of Accident and Emergency Medicine.

In March 1999, I was appointed by the Secretary of State for Health to lead a £115m modernisation programme for Accident and Emergency (A&E). During the 18 month programme I worked at the highest levels of government, leading a multidisciplinary core team of twelve health service and Department of Health professionals. We led the allocation of capital, identified existing good practice in A&E care from around the world and advised ministers on process re-design and emergency care strategy.

Project management around process re-design, departmental design and information systems.

Consultancy work for commercial companies has included advice on bidding for Private Finance Initiative (PFI) contracts to provide minor injuries services and risk management assessment in A&E. I was advisor in Emergency Care, to the Clinical Advisory Group of Healthcare Risk Resources International (UK), part of the MMI Healthcare Services Group, from 1996 to 1999. The role was to give independent advice on risk management in emergency care and undertake organisational reviews. I have lectured on Risk Management in Accident and Emergency Departments.
